Three museums each
claim a fascinating piece of
the area’s history. Gutzon
Borglum, the sculptor of
Mount Rushmore, is the
subject at The Borglum
Story Museum. The National
Presidential Wax
Museum displays every
U.S. leader in various
scenes from throughout
their presidencies. The
intriguing history of
Keystone itself is told at
the Keystone Historical
Museum. A popular section
features memorabilia
of Carrie Ingalls of Little
House on the Prairie fame,
who spent her adult life
in Keystone. You can also
enjoy both history and the
outdoors by taking the
free self-guided Historic
Walking Tour of Keystone.
Maps are available at the
Visitor Information Center,
located downtown.
Worked up an appetite?
There are plenty of places
to dine, whether you prefer
the weekly pig roast at
the Executive Order Grill,
prime rib at the Powder
House, the outdoor cafe
at Rushmore Tramway or
the Old West atmosphere
of the Ruby House. The
Holy Smoke Restaurant
Displays at the National Presidential Wax Museum are an enjoyable
way for visitors to learn more about our nation’s presidents.
offers barbecue ribs “to die
for.”
Another spectacular
ride on the rails is offered
by the Aerial Tramway
that ascends to the mountaintop
for phenomenal
views of Mount Rushmore
and the surrounding
forest. Then, choose
either the tramway or the
Alpine Slide for a thrilling
return trip. Challenge
your family to a game at
Holy Terror Mini Golf
or experience nature on
horseback at Holy Smoke
Trail Rides.
Take a break from the
sun and cool off underground
at Rushmore Cave,
featuring some of the
area’s largest stalactite
and stalagmite formations,
or Big Thunder Gold Mine,
where you can tour the
mine and museum and pan
for gold. n
Visitors enjoy strolling through
the shops lining the boardwalk in
downtown Keystone.
