Dakota has some very
talented sculptors – a
discovery that has helped
grow the area’s appreciation
of the arts over the
past decade. As residents
and tourists pause for a
few minutes before one of
the life-size renditions of
America’s presidents, all
part of Rapid City’s City of
Presidents project, many
come away amazed by
the quality and creativity
shown by the local artists.
They read books, study
photographs and even

the characteristics and personalities
of our nation’s
leaders.
Lee Leunding, John
Lopez, James Michael
Maher, Edward E. Hlavka
and James Van Nuys are
the talents behind the City
of Presidents. Since 2000,
four presidents have been
completed each year, and
