historic cabin. The most
colorful and expansive
garden is in Sioux Park,
located on the banks
of Rapid Creek, across
from Sioux San Hospital
on Canyon Lake Drive.
Dinosaur Park features
seven life-size
concrete dinosaur replicas,
which are perfect
for kid-climbing. The
park overlooks Rapid
City from Skyline Drive,
which offers a spectacular
view, particularly at
night.
The Dahl Arts Center
is new and improved,
after a $6.85 million
expansion project that
spanned more than 18
months. The expanded
facility features three
large art galleries, a
children’s interactive
learning gallery, spacious
and speciallyequipped
classrooms for
arts classes, a versatile
250-seat event space for
performing arts events
and receptions, and
more. The Dahl rotates
exhibits of local and
regional paintings and
sculptures for viewing
and for sale. A sound
and light program highlights
the centerpiece of
the museum, a 200-footlong
mural called
“Cyclorama of American
History.”
The Journey Museum tells the
geological and cultural history
of the Black Hills over a time
span of billions of years.
The Museum of Geology
houses some of the
finest quality fossils of
dinosaurs, giant fish
and prehistoric mammals,
plus extensive
rock collections of agates,
cycads, minerals
and ores. It’s on the
campus of S.D. School of
Mines & Technology.
Challenging educational
art and science
exhibits are offered by
the Apex Gallery in the
new Classroom Building
on the School of Mines
campus. Exhibits are
over 2.5 billion years
ago, to the continuing
saga of the Western
frontier. Admission for
The Journey is well
worth the four museums
it includes – from the
Geology/Archaeology
portion, to the Sioux
Indian Museum. Minnilusa
Pioneer Museum
and the Duhamel Plains
Indian Artifact Collection.
City parks boast a number of
formal gardens, including this
beautiful display at Sioux Park on
the west side of town.

the 1914 First National
Bank building at 7th
and Main and the 1911
Lions Head Fountain
across the street. The
West Boulevard Historic
District is just west of
downtown. Here you’ll
find examples of the
city’s finest 19th and
early 20th century residences.
Climb aboard the
City View Trolley for a
fun and unique tour of
Rapid City. The cost is
only $2 per tour.
The daytime trolley
provides a narrated
city-view tour featuring
various points of
interest in and around
Rapid City from the
Saturday of Memorial
Day weekend to the
Saturday of Labor Day
