South Dakota Vacation Guide 2011 - (Page 75)

A Place for All Seasons A bout 20,000 years ago, the last in a series of glaciers moved across North America. As the glacier entered South Dakota from the northeast, it scoured and scraped the land leveling high places, filling in low areas, smoothing some surfaces and gouging others. The result is what is now known as South Dakota’s Glacial Lakes. Webster is the center of the Glacial Lakes area, with more natural lakes than any other count y in South Dakota. American Indians named many of these lakes, calling them Blue Dog, Pickerel, Waubay and Enemy Swim. Webster is a sportsman’s mecca with waterfowl hunting and fishing opportunities. Enjoy water sports, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, golfing and trap shooting. Learn about the culture and heritage of the area at the 23 buildings that make up the Museum of Wildlife, Science, and Industry of Northeastern South Dakota. Enjoy family fun during the Webster Pumpkin Fest, Oct. 7 & 8, 2011 featuring giant pumpkins, great food, entertainment, contests of all kinds and the beautiful Autumn Parade of Lights. ■ Above: The Glacial Lakes offer prime opportunity for the enthusiastic angler.
