HuNtiNG & FisHiNG IN THE Great Lakes reGioN aNGLiNG oN tHe Great Lakes Known as South Dakota’s Great Lakes, the four reservoirs of the Missouri River offers vast expanses of open water along with secluded channels and remote bays. With so much area to explore, Missouri River anglers enjoy uncrowded waters. And the fish are feisty, too, making for great stories about “the one that got away.” Walleye remain the most popularly fished species in the Great Lakes. Besides walleye, and smallmouth bass you’ll find excellent opportunities for catching white bass, and channel catfish. Other popularly fished species on the reservoirs include sauger, northern pike, Chinook salmon and a variety of panfish. If the abundant water and species aren’t enough, the impressive scenery will complete your Great Lakes fishing experience. And facilities such as boat ramps, bait shops, marinas, resorts, campgrounds and restaurants cater to anglers and their families. BaGGiNG Birds, WaterFoWL aNd BiG GaMe Hunting is a long-standing tradition in the Great Lakes Region. And it’s no wonder when you consider the rolling river breaks, brush-filled draws, sprawling grasslands and agricultural fields that characterize the region. This landscape provides prime habitat for a variety of game species. Each season brings new hunting opportunities in the Great Lakes Region. One of the biggest seasons is fall, when pheasant hunters flock to the area for some of the finest bird hunting in the country. In addition to small game and waterfowl, the Great Lakes Region boasts big-game opportunities including deer, antelope and turkey. Also varmint hunting is available.
