Located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Indian School, the museum offers a rare combination of authentic Native American artifact displays and contemporary works of art by the Northern Plains people. Featured attractions include interactive displays, a life-sized mounted buffalo, a 36-foot diorama, offering a sweeping view of life on the prairie from the Missouri River to the Black Hills. Take Hwy. 83 south one mile, turn left on Hwy 1806 and go five miles to the Center. Located on the Native American Scenic Byway (Hwy. 1806), the Center offers guests a glimpse into the life and traditions of the Lakota, past and present, and features a gift shop with items from Native artisans. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe owns and operates the Buffalo Interpretive Center, Lakota Foods, and the Golden Buffalo Casino & Resort. Groups are welcome and are encouraged to call ahead for listing of tours offered on the reservation. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, with extended hours during the summer. Closed holidays. Pierre, the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center is South Dakota’s newest museum devoted to rodeo history, the competitors and all of the facets that make rodeo South Dakota’s official sport. In addition to the displays honoring world champion icon Casey Tibbs, 9 time world champion, and trick rider Mattie Goff Newcombe, the museum also features interactive displays, thrilling videos, and artifacts of the 18 South Dakota World Champions as well as South Dakota rodeo associations exhibits including: Little Britches, 4-H, Junior High, High School and College, South Dakota Rodeo Association, Great Plains Indian Association, Stock Contractors and Rodeo Personnel, Rodeo Royalty and Contract Acts.
