Take a break from gaming to spend some time viewing such items as Wild Bill Hickok’s death chair, visiting a nearby museum, or tour the Broken Boot Gold Mine and try your hand at panning for gold. History has its place at the table eadwood’s casinos, with their state-of-the-art slot machines and convivial card tables, are more than enough to keep your gambling fever going strong. The Celebrity Hotel is the D home of Nelson’s Garage Car Museum, a free exhibit of some VIP vehicles. The hotel also has more than 80 displays of movie memorabilia on exhibit, including items from such stars as John Wayne, Charlton Heston, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Meg Ryan and more. Of course, the Midnight Star is famed in part for its owner – Kevin Costner – with movie paraphernalia from all of his hits, including Dances With Wolves, a major part of the casino’s splendid décor. A stop at the historic Franklin Hotel is a chance to join an elite group of visitors. You can see the rooms where such notables as Theodore Roosevelt, John Wayne, Buf- 166 falo Bill Cody and Babe Ruth stayed in what remains one of western South Dakota’s most renowned buildings. Then there’s Saloon No. 10, an Old West museum in its own right. Enjoy a drink (kids can have a sarsaparilla until 8:30 p.m.) while viewing historic Western and mining camp artifacts spanning over 100 years. Other family-friendly attractions are the Broken Boot Gold Mine, with a narrated tour of an underground mine and a chance to pan for gold; and Gulches of Fun at the Comfort Inn, which offers hours of entertainment on go-karts, bumper boats, mini-golf, an arcade and more. Main Street retail shops offer something for everyone, too. Ready for one more game of chance to top off the evening? How about trying your luck on “Big Bertha” at the Bodega or “Pharoah’s Gold Machine” at the Midnight Star.
