Hill City’s central location means that any Black Hills activity or attraction is within minutes. It’s easy to enjoy outdoor recreation, such as boating, on nearby Sheridan and Deerfield lakes; a full range of accommodations are available; and, of course, Hill City’s 1880 Train attractions thousands of passengers every year. The living is easy in Hill City f you are looking for scenic beauty, a bit of culture and some fascinating history all the way back to the prehistoric, make sure you take time to stroll the streets of Hill City, the second oldest town in the Black Hills. Founded in 1877 in the early years of the gold rush, it soon found itself on the sidelines as miners headed for the far richer gold strikes in the northern Hills. Yet its central location, with such significant attractions as the Black Hills Central Railroad and the Museum at Black Hills Institute has allowed Hill City to flourish over the I years as a “Heart of the Black Hills” visitor crossroads. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Monument are all a halfhour or less away. Outdoor recreational possibilities surround Hill City. There are seven lakes, plenty of campgrounds, woodsy resorts, marinas and hiking trails for young and old to enjoy within 15 miles of Hill City.
