Staff members, as well as volunteers, work to uncover even more bones at the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, far left. If you love water sports, you can play indoors at Evans Plunge or enjoy boating, fishing, waterskiing and swimming at nearby Angostura Recreation Area. There’s a different wilderness experience at nearby Wind Cave National Park, the world’s fourth longest cave with 132 miles of mapped passageways. It’s known for extensive areas of “boxwork” formations. The park is also home to abundant wildlife such as bison, elk, deer, antelope, prairie dogs and coyotes. If you’re a golfer, don’t miss the opportunity to play the Southern Hills Golf Course, an award-winning golf course in one of the most beautiful settings in the Hills. For the less serious golfer, there’s miniature golf at Black Hills Putt4Fun. Back in town, the paved Freedom Trail provides a pleasant stroll along the lush banks of the Fall River. You’ll go past a waterfall, by the Kidney Springs gazebo and within view of century-old downtown sandstone build- ings. You’ll see the four-story 1893 schoolhouse, now home to the Pioneer Museum in Hot Springs, and the lovely grounds of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which houses the Battle Mountain Museum. All of these features and attractions combined helped Hot Springs, in 2009, win the honored designation as one of America’s most Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Each year, the National Trust selects 12 vacation destinations across the United States that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture and cultural landscapes with a strong commitment to historic preservation. Hot Springs is South Dakota’s first and only “Distinctive Destination.” t 191 Black Hills, Badlands & lakes Region http://www.wildmustangs.com http://www.wildmustangs.com http://www.spanishmustangspirit.com
