The Great American Road Trip Westward on Interstate 90 t’s one of the first, and best, moments of the trip. That’s when you pull past the final stoplight, with a full tank of gas and a bag of everyone’s favorite snacks, and hit the open road. The wide vista stretches before you – your heart lifts. Anything might happen, you’re on the road to adventure! And if you are traveling Interstate 90 between Minnesota and Wyoming, there’s 410 miles of South Dakota freedom, fun and excitement ahead of you. It’s easy to exit off the highway and enjoy some time at one of these unique roadside attractions. I Mitchell’s Corn Palace and the 1880 Town, a few miles outside Murdo, are just two of the many attractions along Interstate 90. After all, it’s a perfect way to relax into full vacation mode before you reach your Black Hills and Badlands destination. Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city, a prairie metropolis with a reputation for fine eating and great shopping. The star attractions are the waterfalls of the Big Sioux River and the Great Plains Zoo. Seventy miles west on I-90 is Mitchell, home of the worldfamous “Corn Palace.” It’s a stunning, whimsical civic center, decorated inside and out with more than 2,000 bushels of corn and forty tons of other grains! Eleven different shades of corn are used for the designs, which change every year.
