SEAHO FAFFAIRS AROUND THE REGION STUDENT EATURE South Carolina Updates Coastal Carolina University University Housing at Coastal Carolina University is continually growing! We have added new positions as well as filled positions as staff departs to seek new opportunities. CCU Housing welcomes: The below team members joined us throughout this year: • Rachel Means - Assignments and Operations Coordinator • Hayley Grimes - Area Operations Assistant • Julie Johanson - Area Operations Assistant • Stephen Swieton - Resident Director • Matt Fortin - Custodian • Johnny Marlowe - Custodian The below members are newly hired or summer hires. • Kathy Daley - Associate Director of Housing Operations, joining us from Mercer University • Shelli Ivey - Resident Director, joining us from Valdosta State University • Daniel Shelnutt - Resident Director, joining us from University of South Carolina • Kathy Mortensen - Area Director, most recently from Western Illinois University • Justin Poindexter - Area Director, joining us from Missouri State University Lander University Lander University has hired two new Residence Life Coordinators as they continue to grow their Housing and Residence Life program—from 800 residents four years ago to 1600 now.The first new member is Jessie Estep. She comes to Lander from Erskine College where she served as a Resident Director while also working with the Sexual Trauma and Counseling Center in Greenwood, SC. Lander’s second new hire is Demario Watts. Demario is a 2012 Lander graduate who worked for the Department of Housing and Residence Life for three years. He was a RA for one year, but promoted to Head RA for two years. His first year he supervised 7 other RAs and a building of 300 residents. His second year of HRA was over 9 other RAs in an apartment complex housing 368 residents. Demario was a Lander Presidential Ambassador was three years. Most notably, Demario represented Lander University at the ACUHO-I STARS college last July! Demario plans to begin his graduate degree this August. Winthrop University Amy Phillips has been tapped to be the new Residence Director of Roddey Hall. Amy is a former Winthrop Resident Assistant completing her graduate work at Winthrop. Virginia Updates James Madison University At the end of March, James Madison University is hosting a campus wide event called House of Privilege for the fourth year in a row. House of Privilege is an interactive experience that aims to illustrate the existence of various types of social privileges and inequities that exist in society. Adapted from the popular Tunnel of Oppression program, the House focuses less on overt and extreme examples of discrimination and more on the subtleties of power and privilege in an effort to promote self-reflection and dialogue. In 2008-2009, it was presented for the first time ever with less than 30 volunteers and roughly 130 participants. Since that time the event has grown dramatically and many other schools have adopted it for their campus. To make this event possible, several offices, academic departments, and organizations on campus collaborate. The Office of Residence Life contributes the space to host the event, all the furniture used in the house, and funding for props, food, and volunteer shirts.
