SEAHO News Award for Outstanding Housing & Academic Collaboration The Housing and Academic Collaboration Award was established in 2006 and will be first presented at the annual conference in Savannah, Georgia in 2008! This award is presented to a housing department that currently has programs in place where academic affairs are intentionally involved in on-campus residential communities. The Housing and Academic Collaboration Award recognizes a program and/or community that involve collaboration between Housing and Academic Affairs. The selection criterion is based on the following: • Providing an outline of academic initiatives and/or ongoing programming • Providing a description of the academic initiative and academic outcomes • Providing the results of the academic initiative (i.e., success stories, statistics on academic improvement of residents and retention rates within the residential community and/or the institution) • The nomination has to include the housing and academic representative of the program University Honors Village North Carolina State University SEAHO FEATURE Finding What Fits: Social Justice Programming Based on Student Feedback By: Whitney McDonald and Abby Prokop Rollins College Who We Are and Where We’ve Been Rollins College in Central Florida is a small, liberal arts institution with a total undergraduate population of approximately 1,800 students. 61% of those students identify as white. According to the mission statement, our goal is to educate students for global citizenship and responsible leadership. In order to work toward that mission, we challenge students to practice introspection in regards to their own privilege and expose them to areas of oppression. Over the past four years, the Office of Residential Life has attempted to educate our students on issues of social justice through three different programs: Tunnel of Oppression, House of Privilege, and Rollins Underground. What each program has in common is an interactive component where students take tours in small groups and encounter experiences allowing them to learn more about privilege and ways they can advocate for underrepresented groups. In 2008 and 2009, we hosted Tunnel of Oppression. Scenes in this program displayed injustices due to domestic violence, immigration, and racism. The actors had the freedom to create their script around specific points that were given to them. The intensity level of the way the scenes were portrayed affected our students. As a result, they were able to recognize that injustices happen in the world, however, the way in which the information was presented left them shocked and overwhelmed. Based on the feedback we received, it was difficult for the students to connect the experience to their everyday lives. This led us to seek out a program that would make the participant relate more to the scenarios presented in the program. 8 SEAHO Report Summer 2012
