SEAHO Report - Winter 2014 - (Page 35)

Student Affairs around the Region Virginia Updates James Madison University JMU Residence Life released an app last summer for use by current and prospective students as well as their families. The app provides users with up to date basic information about our residence halls on campus. The app features 3D virtual tours of every residence hall as well as a map feature that allows users to locate all residence halls and significant campus landmarks. The map also features an integrated location feature that allows a user to see where they are on campus in real-time for a self-guided tour. Since launching in July 2013 the app has been downloaded 2,950+ times. After a jump in downloads after its original release we saw a notable increase the first week of August, with over 600 downloads in just 7 days. We have determined that this increase can be attributed to students receiving their housing assignments. With that in mind, this coming year we plan to market the app specifically to students once they receive their acceptance to JMU and are predicting an additional 2,000+ downloads this summer. We will be releasing an app update in early 2014 to include our new Apartment style-living building as well as a few other text changes. The JMU Res Life app can be downloaded from Apple iTunes and from the Android app store Google Play. JMU broke ground on a new 500 bed apartment building, Grace Street Apartments, this past fall semester. Located near the historic Bluestone section of campus and around the corner from JMU's Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, the new hall is projected to be open for the fall 2015 semester. Comprised mainly of 4-person, 2-bath apartments, the hall will continue the development of the Grace Street corridor and continue to grow JMU's on-campus housing inventory. Apartments will be available for continuing SEAHO Report Winter 2014 students and will come equipped with full kitchens, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, Cable TV and a variety of recreational and study spaces. College of William and Mary The College of William & Mary is pleased to welcome Lauren Garrett, Director - First Year Experience; Jess Raymond, Assistant Director of Community Development; April Palmer, Area Director; and Laura Smith, Assignments Specialist to the Campus Living Team. In order to affirm and strengthen fraternity and sorority life as an important tradition, the College of William & Mary opened new fraternity housing in August 2013. Through this new community, comprised of 11 chapter facilities (adding 187 bed spaces) and a community building, the college seeks to create living environments that advance the highest and historic values of fraternities and sororities that member, alumni, and the college as a whole respect and appreciate. 35
