Introducing Themed Housing

By Bria Webb and Cherise Bailey, Richard Bland College of William & Mary
The Office of Residence Life at Richard Bland College of William & Mary will be introducing to RBC students
two themed communities in Fall 2017, The Statesmen Scholars Community & The Freedom Hall Community.
Our themed communities are designed to bring together like-minded students in an effort to support retention,
growth, and development. Both communities represent collaborative efforts between the Office of Residence
Life and various departments on campus to include Academic Affairs, Student Success, and the Honors
Program. Participation in either community ensures the student will be exposed to a variety of events and
services that will support their academic and personal growth. These communities will help define the Richard
Bland College experience while supporting student retention and transfer to a 4-year institution.
The Statesmen Scholars Community is a Residence Life driven community designed for honor students. The
Statesmen Scholars Community is driven by a program model comprised of (3) components; mentorship,
personal development, & academic excellence. This community is designed to complement student's
experiences as members of the honors program. Students participating in this community will be exposed to
unique opportunities that will reinforce academic commitment, build relationships, focus their passions, and
encourage curiosity & commitment to lifelong service.
The C.H.O.I.C.E (A Collaborative Community- Creating Helpful Opportunities in the College Environment)
Themed Community was created for our first year students who are committed to excelling while in college
and have the desire to be part of a family cohort that will encourage and support them through the various
speed bumps that may arise. Through this community we want to encourage collaborative support throughout
the campus community to help our first year students succeed in every avenue of their college experience.
Participants in this community will attend regular study hall and participate in a programming curriculum that
will support their growth and development.

Selected Musings and Reflections on Retirement

At its 2017 conference in Chattanooga, SEAHO acknowledged individuals who were retired, or were planning
to retire, with official Resolutions of Appreciation for their years of service to the Association. Below are
the reflections, musings, insights, testimonies, and advice from five SEAHO leaders who have left or will
be leaving the housing and residence life profession. These are offered from our hearts in hopes that those
who follow will gain insights and perspective as they plan for the day they will step away from our beloved
institutions and SEAHO.
