is "that would be work" and I am retiring. Candidly, this is probably the biggest trepidation I have about
leaving the work world. After all, work is social and I am social being. The opportunity to work with talented
colleagues at my institution and across the world has been so full and profound for such a long time that I am
concerned what will become a meaningful alternative. Secretly, I would love to be a tour guide of campuses
across the country and world so I could introduce people to the great colleges and universities and get to see my
professional pals at the same time. More practically speaking, I think that professional networks will sustain me
with opportunities to mentor, volunteer and help. I am convinced that the ability to remember peoples' names
can be used for good.
The 1937 Student Personnel Point of View (SPPV) imposed the obligation to consider the student as a whole.
That holistic philosophy has been the bedrock of my view of life and work. In fact, I contend that our focus
on the holistic development of our students sometimes comes at the expense of our lack of focus on our own.
At the close of my professional career, I am comforted that the existential aim of the work we share on behalf
of our students also can becomes the foundation for retirement years. I believe that the knowledge, skills and
experience gained while serving, teaching and learning from students can inform our lifestyle in retirement
years. The same challenge and support skill-set we use to facilitate learning for students should be used by
ourselves and for ourselves in retirement.
Ernie Zelinski, the author of How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free (2009), claims that having a purpose and
staying active, mentally, physically and spiritually, are the keys to a successful retirement. That sounds like a
holistic developmental perspective to me. And a whale of a great way to approach a new stage of life!
I have learned much as I reflected on retirement, so I am going to use the playbook of this coach and teacher
who is walking around on dinosaur bones. I hope that I can take some of the magic pixie dust from NHTI to
develop a fantastic life plan in the sunset years. I wish you Nazdrowie (to your health in Polish)!
