Hello SEAHO Friends!
I hope the summer is wrapping up nicely for everyone and that training season has
begun with a bang! While this time of year always brings long hours, it also brings an
influx of students back to our campuses, which is certainly nothing to complain about.
I will always say that the work we do is a constant adventure, and this training season
has provide some firsts for me as we have enjoyed teambuilding with escape rooms and
high ropes courses (please enjoy my oh-so-flattering pic). Not too shabby for only a
few months out from cancer treatment!
One of the most poignant moments so far in training, though, has been our
staff emphasis on finding your intent, or purpose. Lots of reflection and guided
conversations have led to amazing testimonies from young and seasoned staff members
alike as they share their stories of entering into this profession and discovering their
life's mission through the experiences Housing provides.
As an avid reader of anything and everything I can get my hands on, I love publications like this one for the
inside peek at the mission and purpose of those working alongside me in our region. The Feature Articles we
share each quarter are a perfect glimpse into the passion areas of the authors. In this edition, we have nine
different articles spanning a wide variety of topics. Do you have an interest in using StrengthsQuest for your
staff team? Does spirituality in the residence halls interest you? Do you consider yourself an advocate for
transfer students? Have you ever contemplated the cross-over between baking cookies and personal wellness?
We also have a special article submitted by five legends in our field discussing what retirement means for them.
It is a fascinating read, and I strongly recommend you give it a look.
We have several news pieces relating information from the various institutes of the summer, and a lovely piece
written by our SEAHO Archivist, Kathy Hobgood, celebrating the life and career of the late John Capdevielle,
who served as SEAHO's 5th president. We tried out a new structure for our committee reports, so feel free to
send us some feedback on how you like the new feel of that section. And finally, we have a ton of state and
institution updates announcing new hires, new projects, and state association plans for the fall.
Once you have read through this edition of the SEAHO Report, please take the time to visit seaho.org to submit
your own ideas for our next installment. The submission deadline for the fall edition of the Report is September
26th, so go ahead and add time to your calendar to sit down and share your thoughts with your SEAHO
colleagues!
