North Carolina Updates
Duke University
Duke University is pleased to announce new
members of the Housing and Residence Life (HRL)
team! Jessica Coons is coming to Duke to serve as
the Residence Coordinator for Few Hall on West
Campus. Jessica did her undergraduate work at Emory
University, and her graduate work at Florida State
University. Jessica also worked professionally for
Emory University. Madison Valentine is coming
to Duke to serve as the Residence Coordinator for
Neighborhood 4 on East Campus. Madison did her
undergraduate work at Wright State University,
and her graduate work on Texas A&M University.
John Miller IV is coming to Duke to serve as a
Residence Coordinator for Central Campus. John
did his undergraduate work on North Carolina State
University, as well as completed his graduate studies
there. Carina Carpenter is transitioning from the
Student Development Coordinator role into the
Residence Coordinator role for Neighborhood 5 on
East Campus. Carina did her undergraduate work
at The Ohio State University, and completed her
graduate work at the University of South Carolina.
But for every new hire, we must say farewell
and celebrate the moving on of others. D'Najah
Pendergrass, who served as a Residence Coordinator
on West Campus, will be moving to Wake Forest
University to serve in an Assistant Director of
Residence Life role. Jill Zalewski, who served as
a Residence Coordinator on West Campus, will be
moving to North Carolina State University to serve
as an Assistant Director for the Goodnight Scholars
Program. Kevin Erixson, who served as a Residence
Coordinator on East campus, moved into a Student
Development Coordinator role right here at Duke
University, in the University Center Activities and
Events (UCAE).
East Carolina University
Scott Calovich is a new Residence Hall Coordinator
and will be working in Clement Hall. He completed

53

his Master's in College Student Personnel at Arkansas
Tech University and his undergraduate degree in
Family Studies Human Services with a minor in
Leadership Studies from Kansas State University.
During his time in graduate school, Scott served
as a Resident Director and Practicum Instructor at
Arkansas Tech University. Andrew Palladino is a
new Residence Hall Coordinator and will be working
in Scott Hall. Andrew received his Master's degree
in Higher Education from Texas Tech University and
his undergraduate degree in Communication with a
minor in Sociology and a certificate in Peace Studies
and Mediation from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. During his time in graduate school he
served as a Graduate Hall Coordinator and Graduate
Assistant for Social Justice Education at Texas Tech
University and completed an internship in Student
Development & Recruitment at the University of
Massachusetts-Lowell. Vanessa Lima is a new
Residence Hall Coordinator and will be working in
Greene Hall. Vanessa received her Master's in Public
Administration from Indiana State University and her
undergraduate degree in Criminology and Criminal
Justice with an emphasis in Law Enforcement and
Evidence and a minor in Psychology. During her time
in graduate school, she served as an Assistant Hall
Director in an all-Women's Multicultural community
at Indiana State University. Mike Perry is a new
Associate Director for Residence Life. He received
his Master's degree in Educational Leadership
from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and his
undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice and Spanish
from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as well.
He served as an Area Coordinator at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison prior to coming to ECU.
North Carolina State University
North Carolina State University is excited to
welcome new Community Directors to our team!
Jeremy Lea is joining our team as the Community
Director for the Avent Ferry Complex. Jeremy
completed his graduate work at UNC-Wilmington.
