Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
DEI Partners with Program Committee to Host Conference Affinity Spaces
After smooth sailing check in or awaiting connecting flights to Biloxi, Mississippi, early glances at the
Guidebook schedules would show evidence of extended innovative inclusion with this year's 2018 Southeastern
Association of Housing Officers' (SEAHO) Regional Conference. Various members from the SEAHO Diversity,
Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Committee and the SEAHO Program Committee merged minds and efforts to
collaboratively create "I Identify" Free Form Spaces for conference attendees. For its inaugural year, it was
determined the four affinity spaces would for those that identify as Ally, Interfaith, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender, Queen/Questioning, Intersex, Asexuality, & Plus (LGBTQIA+), and Persons of Color (POC).
Each I Identify affinity space of support was intentionally designed to for individuals of each respective
community to have a space to assemble for visual affirmation and critical reflection to dialogue around the
various aspects of each respective identity. Additionally, all affinity spaces were held simultaneously on
Thursday, March 8th during the 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm to allow for fluid existence and support of one or multiple
spaces; particularly for those of us that shared an intersectionality of multiple identities of these affinity spaces.
