SEAHO Feature Articles
* Georgia Aquarium / Behind the Seas - Students not only visit the Georgia Aquarium for the day but
also go behind the seas and learn from professionals how the aquarium functions. Career opportunities
are also discussed.
* HLN Moring Express tour with Robin Meade - Students got to attend a VIP tour of the HLN Morning Express Show during filming. They were able to watch and learn what takes place in a live working
control room. They were also able to talk with producers, anchors, and other HLN personal about what
they do and career opportunities. This was popular with the communication majors.
* Bodies The Exhibition - Students got an unprecedented opportunity to learn about human anatomy,
health, and biology. They observed real human specimens dissected and preserved to display the intricacies of each body system. Students also got to see the effects on the body of disease and unhealthy
life choices.
Our cost to the students is minimal if anything (usually a $5 reservation fee) and provide opportunities that most
of our student are not able to financially. By adding an educational component to some of the trips the students
get to learn and broaden ideas, thoughts and perceptions.
The program has been a huge success. We start promoting the trips during the summer at orientations. They
have been a great housing recruitment tool. The ResLife Experience Trips has been a great addition to our departmental programming, which we plan to continue as a Columbus State University tradition.

SEAHO 2018 Educational Grant Winner:
Hip Hop Chronicles

Tennessee State University's Department Residence Life seeks to engage and retain first-year students using
hip hop as a conduit to learning and success. The Hip Hop Chronicles reach students with what they love the
most...music!
The purpose of the "I Love Hip Hop Chronicles" is to empower the first year TSU student with the resources
and motivation to be successful both in and outside the classroom. The "Chronicles" help Residence Life give
students the keys to success using campus resources, fun activities and inspiring messages. The team chose the
hip hop theme to reach, motive and empower students as they matriculate and prepare to be successful citizens. Guest presenters included national recording artists, radio and tour DJs, and licensed counselors and
psychologists. As incentives for attendance, t-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, books, and lanyards were given away at
various events.
The Hip Hop Generation Spring 2017 Symposium
served as our pilot program before launching a 5-part
Fall 2017 series of hip hop based programs. Some of the
programs included:
A collaboration with the Counseling Center and Judicial Affairs continued the Hip Hop Chronicles with the
ladies only session, "Get in Formation". The session was
emphasized accountability, positive or negative effects of
hip hop cultures on their lives as well as equipping the
