SEAHO Report - Winter 2018 - 28

Program Committee
* Navigation of Emotion and Numbness: With expectations of professionalism in the workplace, it
becomes difficult to manage emotions that may not be professional. Feelings of anger, hurt, rage, and
emptiness can arise in the midst of oppression and these feelings are valid. The reverse of that is also
possible. Becoming completely numb to these events takes the feeling out of our reactions. We must
have constant conversations, at work, on how to navigate these real, valid, feelings.
* Lack of Attendance: While the call was in the midst of opening and training, there is an ongoing
theme of low attendance in social justice programs and conversations. The people who may need to
be on the calls/in the room are not there and can often become a conversation among people who have
passion in social justice. Challenge yourself and your staff to participate in these calls, to read articles,
to expand their knowledge of systems of oppression and social justice.
* It's Not Always About the Students: Our staff is hurting. Sometimes we have to talk less about how
these events are affecting our students and ask our professionals how they are feeling. Support your
Pros. Make room for their emotions and questions. Be allies for your staff. We cannot be our best
selves for students if we are not holistically taken care of.
Oppression is suffocating. Every form of it is nothing more than a divisive tool that continues to separate us
from truly being in a state of unity. However, it's just as important to remain hopeful as we remain conscious
about the roles each of us serves in identifying, pursuing, and exercising research resolutions for better todays
and tomorrows. Take the time to determine what a brave space looks like for you.
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion committee will continue to host Brave Space Calls throughout the year. If you
are interested in joining the committee or have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at diversity@seaho.org
