SEAHO Report - Winter 2018 - 4

SEAHO President
Dear SEAHO friends,
I hope the SEAHO Report Winter Edition finds each of you enjoying the spring
semester and coming out of the harsh temperatures that most of the Southeast
has experienced this season. I know I will be looking forward to the temps at the
Mississippi coast even more!
The Biloxi conference is mere weeks away as I write this, and I hope that you
are finalizing plans to be in attendance. It will be SEAHO's first venture back to
the Gulf Coast of Mississippi since Hurricane Katrina and our host committee,
led by Shylan Scott from William and Mary University, has worked tirelessly
to ensure we get to enjoy all that the area has to offer! This year's theme is
"Lighting the Way" and having seen may of the program session descriptions,
I feel confident that you will have many opportunities to share your light
and learn from others as they provide opportunities for learning, networking
and professional development. The Program Committee, chaired by Aubree Adams from Louisiana State
University, had an incredibly difficult job of slating the progams for this year's conference, as there were so
many great submissions. Suffice it to say, you will not be disappointed at whatever sessions you choose to
attend. They are all outstanding!
As for the remaining few weeks of my presidency, I want to say a special thanks to the members of the
Executive Board and the Governing Council. I have been so fortunate, not only to call SEAHO my professional
home, but to serve with such an incredible group of professionals from across our region. The work of
this group may start at the conference, but they are working weekly to ensure that SEAHO thrives, that our
membership needs are met, and that the annual conference is a highlight of the work of the professionals in the
region...just one of the many ways we make #SEAHOAllYear happen.
During the past year, we have met on site in Biloxi and Winston-Salem and many times by phone to understand
the various ways we are all staying connected and updated on the work of our association. Initiatives that
have been undertaken this year include the work of Gavin Roark from Virginia Commonwealth University and
his team who have developed an intensely useful conference hosting manual that will assist conference hosts
for years to come; Bob Boyle from University of North Florida has been working with vendors to secure a
new contract for pipe/drape needs for our conference; and Zach Blackmon from Wake Forest University and
his committee started the work of researching how we continue to use technology for our annual association
business meetings and at other times throughout the year. The Member Needs Assessment survey has been
developed and reviewed by your Governing Council and is set to distribute (and may have already by the time
you read this!) soon.
And finally, I'd like to thank my Wake Forest University family. The staff in the Office of Residence Life and
Housing is nothing short of amazing! I work with a team passionate about the student experience, learning,
teaching, and sharing of themselves and the very best of what the field of residence life and housing is about
- endlessly. Thank you, WFU RL&H! And thank you Dr. Penny Rue, Vice President for Campus Life, for
supporting my dream of representing SEAHO as president. What an honor it has been!
Thank you, SEAHO! What a memorable year in the life of our association!
