'MO - June 2008 - (Page 26) your health matters FORM & FUNCTION Turn More Heads By Turning Up the Heat On Your Triceps By Madelyn Fairbanks Location: Gold’s Gym, Broadway Attract more attention by spending some extra time on your triceps. Take your time with these guys. For ultimate toning, start your workout with heavy weight, and finish with lighter weight and higher reps. Throw these extra tips into your tricep workout and keep pushing ’till they’re popping out a few weeks later! TIP 1: TRICEP PUSH-UPS Start out with a heavy weight—yours. These also targets your shoulders and abs. Bonus! • Start in plank position, with your palms on the floor directly below your shoulders • Tighten your core • Lower yourself, bending your elbows back, keeping your arms close to your body • Return to starting position, and repeat TIP 2: TRICEP DIPS Slow down your dips—way down. That guy who’s doing a million reps of anything at super speed is missing out on some major muscle building. • Place your hands behind your hips on a work-out bench • Keep your elbows straight back with your arms close to your body • Lower yourself toward the floor, moving slowly • Return to starting position, and repeat TIP 3: CABLE PRESS Avoid having a number of reps in mind, just repeat until you are physically incapable of doing any more reps. Isolating your triceps can be difficult. Choose a simple exercise to finish your triceps workout, where it’s easy to ensure good form, like a tricep cable press. Since it’s your last exercise, pick a light weight, and go all in for reps. The light weight and high reps will give you major tone and definition. • Use a double rope, grasping one end in each hand • Starting position will make a perfect 90-degree angle in your arms • Finish with arms straight, rope pulled apart, and triceps squeezed • Slowly return to starting position, and repeat Madelyn Fairbanks trains and teaches group exercise in Seattle and owns Mad Abs Fitness.
