'MO - June 2008 - (Page 6) letter from the editor May was a history-making month for California’s gay community. The California Supreme Court struck down that state’s ban on same-sex marriage, so Golden State gays can begin getting MARRIED as early as mid-June. The court’s ruling declared that any law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation will from this point forward be constitutionally suspect in the same way as laws that discriminate based on race or gender, making the state’s highest court the first in the U.S. to adopt such a stringent standard. And it’s no doubt that us Washington state queers will be showing our pride for our recent advances on the marriage front. We’ve made impressive strides over the last two years, not the least of which is the Domestic Partnership Expansion law, which takes effect on June 12th. On that day, we’ll gain about 170 rights never before afforded same-sex couples in this state. Equal Rights Washington, one of the state’s leading proponents of same-sex marriage, has created a brochure to explain these new rights. Browse to their website at www.equalrightswashington.org to read, download, or print a PDF of the brochure. This, our biggest issue yet, is full of great stuff. There’s a comprehensive event calendar on page 18 with loads of great things to keep you busy during the last two weeks of June. And check out our interview with everyone’s favorite say-it-like-it-is comedian Sandra Bernhard on page 22. She’s still not pulling any punches. So, the weather is getting warmer everyday, and you can almost smell summer drifting our way. Plan now for a great summer getaway with one of the “out”door groups in our “The Things We Do” spread on page 16. Here at the ’moffice we’re proud to announce that we’ve finally gone digital.
