'MO - July 2008 - (Page 18) your health matters FORM & FUNCTION Hard Core: Molding Your Middle By Madelyn Fairbanks Location: Gold’s Gym, Broadway Your core is the center of everything. Developing a strong midsection not only looks hot, but it increases your endurance all over the place—including the bedroom. Working for definition may give you tone, but adding true strength to your six-pack brings the heat to your performance. You’ll notice the difference when you run a mile, and he’ll notice the difference when you’re both sprinting to the finish line. Combine these exercises with your normal ab routine and fit in 30 minutes of core two to three times a week. Try to mix up your routine to avoid plateaus. You’ll be loving your tummy in no time. TIP 1: HIP RAISES ON BENCH Target: lower abdominals • Head is at the top of an inclined bench, feet straight up in the air. • Bend legs at knees if needed. • Raise hips off the bench for a slow one, two, three count. • Slowly lower for a one, two, three count. • Aim the bottoms of your feet to the ceiling; push straight up. • Repeat for one minute. TIP 2: PLANK-UPS Target: overall abdominals, obliques • Begin in hand plank position, palms on the floor directly below shoulders. • Lower yourself down to elbow plank, one elbow at a time. • Bring yourself back up to hand plank, one hand at a time. • Keep body perfectly straight, core tight, and butt down! • Repeat for one minute.
