'MO - July 2008 - (Page 21) travel cawthrasquare.com; C$99+), 32 upscale guest rooms and suites, if you want to stay gay and in the Village. Design enthusiasts should snap up rooms at the unique Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St W., 416-531-4635; www.gladstonehotel.com; C$175+). The lesbian-owned hipster haunt in Queer West is an artist-designed hotel with rooms such as Teen Queen, Sugarbush, and The Puzzle Room. Locals also enjoy the exhibition space, live music, and weekly queer night, “Hump Day Bump.” For a great cup of Joe, check out Balzac’s Cafe in The Distillery District. EAT For that quintessential Toronto meal, you’ll want to reserve ahead for big names Jamie Kennedy at the Gardiner, Mark McEwan’s North 44, and the thrilling C5 at the R.O.M., but for a perhaps more authentic Toronto dining experience, make your way to some of the ethnic neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, Little Italy, Little Portugal, Little India, or Greektown, and tuck in. PLAY The huge LGBT social scene is always changing, but Village stalwarts, such as Crews & Tango, Woody’s, and girl lounge, Slack’s, remain popular. Pick up local LGBT news magazine Xtra from the omnipresent purple boxes to find out what’s hot when you’re in town. Toronto’s Space Needle, the CN Tower (301 Front St West; 416-8686937; www.cntower.ca), may have been beaten out for the position of world’s tallest by Dubai’s lofty Burj, but it’s worth ascending for the fabulous city, Lake Ontario, and Toronto Islands views. The Islands (ferries from Queen’s Quay West), offer picnic spots, bike trails, and beaches (including gay-popular, clothing optional Hanlan’s Beach), are another definite must for visitors. The Distillery District shouldn’t be missed either. The continent’s largest and best-preserved collection of Victorian architecture is today an atmospheric area, home to galleries, restaurants, cafes, a theatre and a buzzing pub. The Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen’s Park; 416-586-5549; www.rom.on.ca), with its stunning Libeskind-designed addition, is famed for its Chinese collection. While you’re in the area, sashay along to the fun Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor St; 416-979-7799; www.batashoemuseum.ca) and see whom the shoes fit (Elton and Marilyn Monroe, included). In Toronto, there’s a shoe to fit everyone. GETTING THERE Most major U.S. airlines fly from Seattle to Toronto, many with connections in Vancouver, B.C. With connections, flights take from 6.5 hours to reach Pearson International in Toronto. Aefa is a senior writer with The Out Traveler, Gay.com and PlanetOut.
