Look good and drink your martini too! Follow a few simple rules and you might actually come home looking leaner than before. EAT TO YOUR BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR) This is easy to find online, and should be your most important guide in enjoying your vacation without taking a few giant—and detrimental—steps back in your physique. Your BMR is the number of calories you’d burn if you didn’t lift a finger all day. If you eat to your BMR, the extra calories you consume in alcohol won’t affect you as much, and the lack of workout effect will be minimal. Get your BMR calculator on the Web at http://health.discovery. com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html. EAT SMALL MEALS AND ONLY WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY Going on vacation isn’t about stuffing yourself, it’s about enjoying the good food you encounter, and the company you encounter it with. Sample the local fare, but do just that—sample. This will allow you to try a variety of foods throughout the day. If you’re not hungry enough for a meal, get an appetizer, or just a drink. Eating small meals with more frequency will also help keep your metabolism spiked when you’re lying by the pool or on the beach. BRING SNACKS FROM HOME Tattoo this on your forehead—airport food is evil! Food in the airport is puffed up with simple starches, portioned low on protein, and loaded with hidden calories like sauces and cheeses. Go old school and pack one or two small salads or veggie-filled brown rice bowls to munch on during a long trip across or out of the country. As for the rest of your trip, bring some protein bars, fruit and string cheese for some 100- to 200-calorie snacks to nibble in the hotel. Munch on these instead of ordering a whole meal, or eating a naughty, not-worth-it snack. Save the calories for good meals and delicacies. If you’re not working out like you do at home, you probably won’t be as hungry anyway. madelyn Fairbanks trains and teaches group exercise in seattle. she owns mad abs Fitness, www.madabsFitness.com. mario BruNo Photo creDit: P ER SON OF TH E Vik Livingston Assistant Sales Manager vlivingston@downtownharley.com 13001 48th Ave S.
