'MO - September 2008 - (Page 27) p/reviews FEATURE FILM PREVIEW IDP & Landmark Theatres are proud to present the Seattle engagement of Trumbo As one of the “Hollywood Ten”—film professionals who refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee and were subsequently imprisoned—screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Roman Holiday, The Brave One, Spartacus, Exodus) made a heroic journey from Hollywood royalty to blacklisted writer to Academy Award winner. Against the backdrop of tremendous political unrest, we are given an emotional and at times humorous account of how this turmoil affected one of Hollywood’s most prolific writers. Director Peter Askin’s documentary features brilliant readings of Trumbo’s extraordinary letters (performed by Joan Allen, Brian Dennehy, Michael Douglas, Paul Giamatti, Nathan Lane, Josh Lucas, Liam Neeson, David Strathairn and Donald Sutherland), interlaced with interviews, home movies and excerpts from his films. Written by Christopher Trumbo (Dalton’s son), based on his play. This film is Rated PG-13 by the MPAA. Running time 96 minutes. Exclusive engagement opens Friday, September 12th at Landmark’s Varsity Theatre, 4329 University Way N.E., (206) 781-5755. NOW ON DVD Itty Bitty Titty Committee From the director of But I’m a Cheerleader and the producers of D.E.B.S. This latest fabulous movie from Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader) is a dynamic, romantic, funny and politically astute movie with a smart script, rockin’ soundtrack and terrific ensemble cast that includes sexy young Melonie Diaz as the new grrrl on the block who falls in with a gang of feisty feminists and then falls in love with leader of the pack, Nicole Vicius. Unfortunately, Nicole has a girlfriend—Melanie Mayron—and, as they say, drama ensues. With Carly Pope, Daniela Sea, Guinevere Turner, Deak Evgenikos, Jenny Shimizu and Lauren Mollica. Voted by Variety as one of 10 Filmmakers to Watch, Babbit made her feature film directorial début with But I’m a Cheerleader, a stylized comedy that was Lion’s Gate Films’ biggest commercial success of 2000. Babbit’s second feature film The Quiet, a suburban thriller, was released theatrically in 2006 by Sony Classics. moseattle.com 27 issue 19 | september 2008 http://www.salondewi.com http://www.moseattle.com
