'MO - October 2008 - (Page 11) community GLAAD To Be Aboard By Vincent Kovar Last month, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) took to the waves of Puget Sound to celebrate more than 20 years of educating the media and the public on how to accurately portray the queer community. GLAAD president, Neil Giuliano and the GLAAD Board of Directors invited guests on a sunset cruise aboard the Argosy ship, the Lady Mary on the evening of September 3rd. Along with wine and spirits provided by Clois Du Bois Winery and Absolut, guests enjoyed delicious catering, live entertainment and an update on GLAAD’s accomplishments. Among the guests was Drew Emery, creator of the award-winning film, In Laws and Outlaws. The success of that film is exactly the type of positive storytelling that GLAAD supports. Also in attendance was Charlene Strong, co-producer and subject of the documentary, For My Wife, which traces her journey from grieving widow to national activist in the historic movement toward marriage equality. From churches to schools, from coast to coast, GLAAD has played a vital role in shaping the visibility and awareness of gay and lesbian lives. In addition to its work with youth, its ambassadorship with the mainstream media and its celebration of queer stories, GLAAD was also saluting its Announcing Equality campaign. Started in 2002, the campaign has changed the face of newspaper portrayals of queer weddings and other ceremonies and pushed the number of inclusive papers from 70 to nearly 1050. According to the campaign literature, “Coming out is only the first step. It’s your responsibility to talk about it, celebrate it [and] announce your equality.” To help promote its work, GLAAD called on cruise attendees (and now calls on ’mo readers) to raise their voices and join either the Media Circle or the Alliance Circle of its membership.
