FORM & FUNCTION Stripping Down for the Holidays Three Important Steps for Burning Off Those Last Few Pounds By Madelyn Fairbanks October signifies the official start of the holiday season. And you know what that means—an excessive number of holiday parties! Make the most of your holiday season by starting it out right and looking fabulous at a neighborhood Halloween soiree. If you plan on donning a hot Halloween costume, or simply looking hot at a party, these three tips are a must. STEP ONE: NO ALCOHOL You’ll be soaking yourself in the stuff soon enough, so make October 1st your first dry day. No wine, no martinis, no alcohol until Halloween. Cutting out the extra calories in alcohol will make a significant difference in your weight. Some sources report that alcohol reduces your body’s ability to burn fat by more than 70%. All that sugar you take in with your cocktail will likely turn to fat, not to mention the extra munchies you’ll gobble while you’re drinking. STEP TWO: SPLIT UP YOUR WORKOUTS Once the shakes subside (see step one) and you’re through the detox, simply split your workouts in two. Do a vigorous cardio workout in the morning (30 minutes minimum), and strength training at night (also 30 minutes minimum). Your body will make every effort to return to your basal metabolic rate for the next 12–24 hours after you workout, so if you hit it again within that time span, you’ll be almost doubling your calorie burn by the second workout. This is the easiest way to shed a few pounds quickly. STEP THREE: CUT! CUT! CUT! The last step should be done during the last two weeks. You’re feeling good after cutting back your alcohol intake, and you should be seeing a difference with your double workouts, so go all the way with your diet and cut, cut, cut! Cut out obvious forms of carbohydrates, in mostly starch form, such as pasta, bread, rice and cereal. Load up on veggies and lean protein, and have a high-fiber, non-starch as your carb for energy, such as beans, fruit, or tofu. Start your day with a protein shake with some berries and milk, and finish every day out right. You’ll be a clean, lean, holiday machine!
