'MO - October 2008 - (Page 25) p/reviews WHAT NOT TO MISS (beyond the horror genre) WE R E TH E WOR LD MINE This opening night film features an angstridden small town prep school teenager (Tanner Cohen) who expresses himself best though fantastic musical interludes composed by Jessica Fogle. Young Timothy has landed himself the part of Puck in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream—and he makes Puck’s love potion himself, then proceeds to use it to make everyone in his school gay. Wouldn’t you? STEAM One of two festival centerpieces, in this film three women from different generations find their lives intersecting in a health spa steam room: an elderly woman (Ruby Dee) struggles to overcome her grief in the wake of her husband’s passing; a middle-aged woman (Ally Sheedy) struggles to come to grips with single parenting and dating her son’s much younger football coach; and a college-aged woman (Kate Siegel) struggles to come to grips with—you guessed it!—being a lesbian. A scene from the centerpiece film, Steam. SAVE M E The other centerpiece film is a gripping drama about a gay drug addict (Chad Allen) who overdoses and then finds himself in the care of Genesis House, a Christian-run recovery center where they attempt to relieve their residents of their addictions—and their homosexuality. Can you guess the gender of the person he falls in love with? Includes a memorable turn by Judith Light as the house matriarch. A scene from the opening night film, Were the World Mine. Chad Allen and Robert Gant in the centerpiece film, Save Me. WATCH THE TRAILER HERE . FOR MY WIFE One of several documentaries as well as local films, this one focuses on activist Charlene Strong, and how being denied basic rights of hospital visitation and burial decision making for her wife, audio book narrator Kate Fleming, turned her into an advocate for same-sex marriage rights. Fleming died in a flash flood during the 2006 Hanukkah Eve Storm; Strong was instrumental in getting Washington state’s domestic partnership law passed. For My Wife is screening at Cinerama, 2100 4th Avenue, Seattle, on Sunday, October 19 at 4:30 p.m. Read a collection of Matthew’s reviews of current and past films on the Web at http://cinema-holic. livejournal.com. moseattle.com 25 issue 20 | october 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC_Q44P8_m4 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=831324984463792387&ei=OHfcSL28GaeKqQOmhM2MCw&q=%22save me%22 film trailer&vt=lf http://cinema-holic.livejournal.com http://cinema-holic.livejournal.com http://www.moseattle.com
