'MO - October 2008 - (Page 6) letter from the editor It was four years ago in October that I made my first real visit to Seattle. Peter (my partner) and I had a brief layover in Seattle several months before, but my only views of the city were from the plane and the airport. Peter had been to Seattle many times in the past and had long ago formed his opinion of the city. I only knew it rained, a lot. What I didn’t know, and what I learned on our four-day visit that October, was how beautiful it was here. Having grown up in the Midwest, but then living in the desert for eight years, I had forgotten about the incredible colors of fall. I had always been a lover of fall. And to be here amongst the golds and reds of fall once again, with the mountains in the distance and the Sound and the many lakes surrounding me, stirred something inside. I was hooked. We moved to Seattle within 30 days of that visit. We left behind a house we had just purchased, countless friends, and endless sunshine. We left behind family. Some were family by blood, and some were family by choice, but each was a source of love and support. It was a difficult, but necessary choice. Happily, during the four years we’ve been here, Peter and I have rebuilt our family (of choice); and through the marvels of modern technology and travel, we’ve maintained many of our Phoenix relationships. We both have aging parents, siblings and various nieces and nephews. They’re all part of our “village,” and they’re all part of our growing and changing family.
