'MO - November 2008 - (Page 19) PHOTO BY BRIAN MALLEY PHOTO BY ANDY DIT TRICH world. Expect to find yourself in line for the lifts with skiers and socialites from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the U.K. The word about Whistler has spread and this event is getting bigger and better every year. Even though about 80 percent of the 3000 snow worshippers attending are men, WinterPRIDE is definitely the top lesbian gay ski week, with a truly fantastic itinerary for women. Girls can go wild at speed dating, at women-specific après-skis, at hot events from Vancouver’s Flygirl party promoters, and even at the World Championship Women’s Bobsled reception. Boys have a similar array of scintillating events on the schedule, with the United Colors of WinterPRIDE Fashion Show, featuring hot delegates of International Mr. Gay, and the International Mr. Gay Grand Finale shining as particular highlights. There are 24 crowned Mr. Gays from around the world participating, including Vancouver’s own, Darrell Bruce, a.k.a. the dashing Mr. Gay Canada. Other boy-centric selections on this year’s calendar include the fantastic annual Snowball at the Whistler Conference Centre, where the teeming crowds will be whipped up to fever pitch by Rio de Janeiro’s star DJ Ana Paula. The MountainTOP dance party, held 7000 feet up Whistler Mountain, throbs with hundreds of dancing bodies on the Friday night. Even the bears come out of hibernation for the notorious Bear Trap Party. It doesn’t stop there. As well as comedy with David C. Jones and Ms Pussy Willow, WinterPRIDE pulls out all the stops with an enticing selection of culinary and health and wellness events. Opt for sessions such as the moseattle.com dramatic Mixology with a Flare, the tasty Wine Maker Diners, or the hilarious AbFab Dining Experience, as well as signing up for wine tastings and cooking classes. After a hard few days on the slopes, you’ll be eager to sign up for skin care workshops, Laughing Yoga, or Body Core conditioning. Meanwhile, a flotilla of volunteers armed with skis and snowboards, take to the slopes as expert ski guides to lead beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders over Whistler Blackcomb’s acres and acres of snowy heaven. Voted No.1 ski resort in North America for the twelfth year in a row by SKIING Magazine readers, Whistler Blackcomb just gets better and better. Between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, the resort area offers nearly 8200 acres, along with a chance to test one of the 2010 Winter Olympics sites. Whistler Blackcomb, the host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is home to 10,000 permanent residents, but its numbers swell to vastly more than that as soon as the first flakes start falling. This year, opening day is set for November 27, and December 12 sees the grand opening of the impressive PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. [See related story on page 13.] The thrilling new gondola spans the distance between Whistler and Blackcomb in just eleven minutes, saving skiers and boarders from having to make the tough choice between the two mountains.
