In 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. predicted that though there were at that time, many blacks qualified to be president, it would likely take the United States another 40 years to elect a black person to that position. (He went on to say, ‘maybe in 25 years.’) And though his prediction was off by a few years, we did finally make it. This country, which was built on slavery, and which continues to struggle with race relations, elected its first AfricanAmerican to the office of president. That fact can never be erased from history. It is America’s story now. Events such as these remind us that we are still a young nation; are still experiencing growing pains; are still learning our way. We have a distance to go, and I want to rush ahead four years, and then eight years. And then 12 years, to see how the world has changed, and is changing. Who do we elect next? A woman? A gay man? How has today’s hope changed the world? If the election of 2008 taught us—the people of a democratic nation, anything, it finally taught us that our collective voices and our unified will, can and do make a difference in our governance.
