Noteworthy sights in northern Arizona are seemingly without end and whether you stay in the area for a few days, or even a few weeks, odds are you won’t manage to see them all. But anchoring yourself in Sedona is an easy and enjoyable way to get through the list. Here are a few favorite sights to get you started, numbered as they appear on the map on page 24. Huckaby Trail town, by driving Forest Service Road 153, 6 miles up rugged Bear Wallow Canyon to scenic Schnebly Hill Vista, overlooking the Verde Valley and Sedona. Enjoy the thrill ride up this former cow trail in your own four-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicle, or take a tour and leave the driving to someone else. (928) 282-4119. 5 RED ROCK CROSSING One of the most photographed scenes in the state, this spot is where Cathedral Rock, this area’s majestic natural icon, is reflected in Oak Creek. Located just off Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Historic Crescent Moon Ranch is nearby. 6 RED ROCK STATE PARK Follow Upper Red Rock Loop Road through a beautiful, pristine area to this unique 286-acre state park. This environmental center offers exhibits, classes and outdoor activities. Fee required. (928) 282-6907. Schnebly Hill Road 1 CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS Featuring a reinforced cross that juts from a 1,000foot-high rock wall and soars 90 feet into the air, this 52-year-old, view-studded chapel is located 3 miles south of the intersection of Hwys 89A and 179 on Chapel Road. (928) 282-4069. 2 SEDONA HERITAGE MUSEUM Located at Jordan Historical Park in an old apple orchard, this museum depicts a century of Sedona’s history in pictures and memorabilia. 735 Jordan Road, (928) 282-7038. 3 OAK CREEK CANYON Site of Oak Creek Recreation Area, this canyon Photos by Tom Johnson features great hiking, fishing, convenient camping, a natural water slide at Slide Rock State Park and one of the richest riparian areas in the country.
