The majority of them are clear, concise lists of criteria and performance ratings. They are useful to assure compliance with the contract documents. recent versions of the Quality Standards do all that and more. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions of the AWI Quality Standards (approximately 1973 to 1993) contained illustrations, tables, and lists. a few of the sections had short paragraphs of background information related to the topic of the section. Beginning with the 6th edition (1993) and continuing through the 7th (1997) and the 8th (2003 to present), the authors and editors adopted the philosophy that design professionals and woodworkers seeking both standards and knowledge about the trade should be able to get it all in one place – the Quality Standards Illustrated. included in most fabrication sections are a number of design ideas, drawings from real projects contributed by woodwork manufacturers, as shown in illustration above right. These illustrations are intended to “kick start” the creative juices, as well as offer sug1961 and yet the ornamentation takes a distinctly different form. each section in these later editions is enhanced with both technical and aesthetic additions to the basic mate- gested design solutions for common applications like a bank teller line. other illustrations are included to reinforce or continue the education of the construction team. in many parts of north america there is a limited amount of work done in what might be termed “classical” architecture. when a project involving columns and related design elements comes up, the Qsi provides a refresher course in terms and application. romanesque and Gothic building designers often had the same mathematical concerns as classical builders, 1963 figure 700-02 rial and workmanship standards.
