Design Solutions - Spring 2008 - (Page 24) New Lenox Village Hall Styling CueS One enters the building under a covered porch supported by Doric columns, and into a domed rotunda. Columns surround the rotunda. Lighting fixtures in the shape of pineapples sit on wood newels at the base of two circular staircases framing the open area. During colonial times the 24 DESIGN SOLUTIONS gift of a pineapple was considered to be the highest degree of hospitality. The space is dramatic in size and height. It is grounded by a wood wainscot and capped by a large cornice and wood crown moulding. When standing in the center and looking straight up, one sees into the tower that is an interior source of natural light and at night an exterior lighted beacon. Woodmill Products produced all the paneling, desks and running trim for the $14.8 million building, as well as all work in the board room. Plain sliced Oak, finished with a conversion varnish, was used throughout the space. The elegant Oak trim anchors the interior to the period of architecture. It I Spring 2008
