AWI is frequently asked about species selection and availability, dimensional stability and the uses of wood outdoors, in rated conditions, or with preservative treatment. Lumber grades are often confusing. Grading systems and methods to call out lumber for fine woodworking are examined. After reading this article, you should be able to: 1. Understand the terminology of the industry. 2. Avoid the use of unclear or conflicting language. 3. Know where to start when choosing a type of wood to use for a project. 4. Understand the eight factors which influence lumber selection. 5. Celebrate natural characteristics. 6.
