Executive Talent to Manage for the Duration is Often an Endurance Test “It had nothing to do with being a super human being, but I noticed our commander kept us focused on what we had to accomplish,” says Hope, founder and vice president of programs at LeaderPoint in Similar to how astronauts and pilots are trained by getting close to the reality of flying through simulation, LeaderPoint creates an environment where executives are forced to lead from the moment they begin the week-long program—it’s not unlike parachuting into enemy territory with only the basics for survival, including a trusted team, if you’re lucky. Of course, executives have been given a clear mission, but no job description, no existing policies, as well as no team, Hope says. Given a problem, executives first go to the numbers to find a solution, he says. “But in the simulation they are parachuted into the problem, where they have to ‘own’ the problem and use their creative and critical thinking to solve the problem.” By Kathleen J.
