Endangered Maryland 2009 - (Page 10) 6. LINWOOD VILLAGE First nominated in 2007, when a large construction project threatened the tranquility and character of the historic area, the village of Linwood appears on this year’s list due to a new threat. A proposed aboveground and elevated stone conveyor system, which will transverse the Priestland Valley adjacent to the historic Linwood Brethren Church, is wholly inconsistent with the pristine agricultural setting and the historic character of the area, explains John Carr of the Historic Linwood Preservation Association. Carr is the nominator and property owner. The quaint, charming area, which consists of brick homes, a century-old, fivestory grain elevator, a 1905 “countrygothic” style church, and the original 1877 general store, is one of the most well-preserved 19th-century rural villages in Carroll County. “There is very little in Linwood or the surrounding fields and meadows of the Priestland Valley that the original inhabitants wouldn’t recognize,” says Carr. “This hearkens back to a more genteel and placid time in our history.” An industrial structure of this scale will forever diminish the historic character of this agrarian setting, adds Carr. “The conveyor will serve as a monument to the notion that an increase in marginal profits for a multinational, multibillion-dollar corporation should trump all other considerations, including the preservation of our culture and our history.”
