Endangered Maryland 2009 - (Page 2) OLD threatened—properties. However, several changes took place this year. For one, Endangered Maryland applicants no longer may anonymously submit nominations. Individuals with a desire to save beloved properties for future generations must be named. Another change is the sponsorship of nominations by nonprofit organizations. “When people respond to this call to action, they want to donate time and money, and that is easiest accomplished through an organization,” explains Tyler Gearhart, Preservation Maryland’s executive director. And, since nominators and owners are often not one and the same, each had a chance to comment on the feasibility of the preservation efforts. Consider the choices on this year’s list and make your own decisions. Can—and should—these historic sites be saved? You be the judge. This year’s nominees are: MECHANIC THEATRE, BALTIMORE CITY MOUNT NEBO AME CHURCH, PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, CECIL COUNTY UPTON MANSION, BALTIMORE CITY FALKLAND APARTMENTS, MONTGOMERY COUNTY FRIENDSHIP HALL, DORCHESTER COUNTY HANDSELL, DORCHESTER COUNTY HIGH WINDS GUN CLUB, WORCESTER COUNTY LINWOOD VILLAGE, CARROLL COUNTY THE SITES BRUMBAUGH-KENDLE-GROVE FARMSTEAD, WASHINGTON COUNTY theaters, dilapidated mansions, an Eastern Shore gun club, a quaint valley village. Relics requiring safeguarding or banged-up buildings necessitating new use? Early artifacts or antiquated edifices beyond purpose? For the third year in a row, Maryland Life has partnered with Preservation Maryland, the state’s oldest historicpreservation organization, to create “Endangered Maryland,” a list of the state’s most historically, culturally, and architecturally significant—and urgently Again, Endangered Maryland’s all-volunteer committee members (see sidebar) reviewed a slew of comprehensive applications and then passionately argued the merits of each property’s nomination during a lengthy meeting at St. Paul’s Rectory in Baltimore to determine this year’s list, embargoed until this publication. MEET THE ENDANGERED MARYLAND SELECTION COMMITTEE These hard-working volunteers reviewed voluminous applications and complicated plats of threatened historic sites across the state; consulted each other about the merits and drawbacks of each application; and animatedly discussed the urgency of the threats before selecting 10 sites for the Endangered Maryland list.
