FRIENDSHIP HALL A fine example of post-Revolutionaryperiod architecture is about to become Friendship Hall, a National Registerlisted, Georgian-style, two-story brick dwelling, was built around 1740 and served as the home of the Sulivanes, who were among Dorchester County’s earliest settlers. The elegant building, surrounded by 12 bucolic acres, served as home to merchant James Sulivane, a Revolutionary War officer who helped organize a local regiment of the colonial army called the New Market Blues. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, he took out a patent for 911 acres of land he called New Market, explains Amanda Fenstermaker of the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area, who nominated the property. “Preserving this 18th-century, Georgian-style mansion and surrounding property is critical in maintaining the town’s historic character and ambience,” says Fenstermaker. “If preserved, the Friendship Hall property will serve as the central component of the town’s heritage-tourism efforts. The mansion and grounds could be used as a bed-andbreakfast, culinary school, [and/or] horseback riding stables, and it could be rented for weddings and special events.” Attorney David Moore, who owns the property, did not return calls for comment.
