Howard Life - October 2007-May 2008 - (Page 15) successful group formed by Toby Orenstein in 1975 to promote the arts in the city. The entire event served to remind all Columbians of their roots and of the cooperative spirit that continues to make this highly praised community so successful. As in past years, I.M.P. continued to add improvements to the facility. New cameras purchased for use with the Merriweather video system resulted in superb picture quality on the video screens both in the pavilion and on top of the roof. And additional screens were set up on the property for those shows with multiple stages so guests everywhere could enjoy the mainstage performances, as well. I.M.P. also emphasized its desire to make Merriweather “green” by adding 400 square feet of solar panels to the roof of the stage house. During the season, these panels will convert sunlight into electricity for the venue’s electrical system; when the season is over, the sun-powered electricity can be sent back to the power grid for use elsewhere. “ The highlight of the 2007 season was the celebration of Columbia’s 40th birthday on July 15 at Merriweather. General Growth Properties gave the residents a free party to end its 40-day celebration of the founding of the planned community. Brad Canfield, director of operations and production at Merriweather, explains that bands’ tour buses will also be able to plug into certain electrical outlets powered by the solar panels. This will help lessen the electrical needs of the facility. In an effort to be even more environmentally friendly, the venue now also uses highefficiency light bulbs backstage and has constructed a compost pile as a source for the soil needed to grow new grass and nurture the historic beech trees on the property. ” Howard County Executive Ken Ulman presented I.M.P. with the county’s first “Green Salute” Award for making an effort to preserve the environment for future generations. With I.M.P.’s continued technical updates to the venue, its commitment to making the facility environmentally friendly, and its ability to bring the best entertainment to the DC/Baltimore corridor, Columbia can rest assured that the next 40 years at Merriweather will be every bit as exciting, if not more so, as its first 40. ■ LANCE ARMSTRONG in Howard County ON OCTOBER 26-27, the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults will roll out the yellow carpet in Howard County for Lance Armstrong in celebration of the organization’s 10th anniversary.
