Howard Life - October 2007-May 2008 - (Page 27) FAMILY FUN: AGRITOURISM Agriculture ranks among the top five industries in Howard County, with sales exceeding $200 million annually. Howard County's major crops include dairy and livestock, corn and small grains, and hay and pastures. Additional agricultural products include tree fruit, small fruits, vegetables, nursery products, plants, and landscaping materials. Also home to a thriving horse industry, Howard County offers premier breeding farms, recreational riding facilities, boarding stables, and therapeutic riding centers. Farms in Howard County offer up yearround family fare for visitors and residents alike. The petting zoo and hayride at Clark’s Elioak Farm in Ellicott City, the new home of the Enchanted Forest, is one of many fabulous ways to experience area farming. Other traditional offerings, such as fall harvest festivals, pick-your-own produce, picnicking, corn mazes, pumpkin picking, farm-machinery demonstrations, and more are available throughout western Howard County at various locations, including Sharp’s at Waterford Farm, Larriland Farm, and the Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum. Circle D Farm is one of many area farms that offer amenities such as meeting and wedding space, day camp, and corporate and family picnicking. Annual agricultural festivals abound, too, and include the Howard County Fair each August, the Howard County Farm-City Celebration for two weeks each fall, and the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, held yearly on the first weekend in May. ■ Sharps at Waterford Farm What was he thinking?
