It was also doomed. In the summer of 2003, Merriweather’s owners announced plans to close the pavilion. It was outdated, they said, losing money, and it no longer reflected the cultural needs of the community. The community, however, begged to differ. Under the banner of Save Merriweather—a group my friend and I hatched—residents of Howard County and beyond rallied around the pavilion. At the same time, Howard’s elected officials joined the movement and, ultimately, after a couple years of persistent work and late-night public hearings, the owners relented, deciding to keep it open. Following the public outcry, I.M.P. Productions, the group behind Washington’s famous 9:30 Club, signed on to manage the pavilion, bringing their winning formula to the ‘burbs and breathing new life into Merriweather. Even now, after several successful seasons, I’m still a little hesitant to say Merriweather has been “saved,” but I am confident in one thing: it is still, thankfully, Howard County’s best night out.
