Howard Life - June 2008-September 2008 - (Page 22) 2008 Artists MERRIWEATHER POST PAVILION Duran Duran Over the years, renowned English rock group Duran Duran have stormed radio, television, and pop culture with a string of hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” and “Come Undone.” Never afraid to push the envelope, the band recently collaborated with mega-producer Timbaland and fellow pop sensation Justin Timberlake for their latest album, Red Carpet Massacre. See these Brits storm Merriweather this May. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss Though the collaboration between legendary Led Zeppelin front man and solo artist Robert Plant and acclaimed veteran bluegrass songstress Alison Krauss initially had some scratching their heads, the resulting album, Raising Sand, has delighted countless music fans. Helmed by seasoned songwriter/producer T-Bone Burnett, the folk-rock album features two of contemporary music’s best voices working together with amazing results. On Friday, June 13, don’t miss your chance to see these highly talented and influential musicians perform together in stunning fashion. Steve Miller Band One of the most eclectic rock bands to come out of the late ‘60s, the Steve Miller Band has proven time and time again that real skill and musicianship never go out of style. After four decades, the Steve Miller Band is still regarded as one of the best live performances to see. Along with solid ‘70s blues-rocker Joe Cocker, who recently appeared in the Beatles-filled movie Across the Universe, this show at Merriweather will be one for any and all music fans. Return to Forever A brainchild of legendary jazz keyboardist Chick Corea, fusion supergroup Return to Forever has had a rotating cast of jazz and rock’s greatest musical virtuosos over the years. In 2008, Corea has regrouped the band after 25 years, joined by bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Di Meola (the 1983 lineup that never fully had a chance to take off). Once again carrying the torch for awe-inspiring live fusion jazz, Return to Forever will give Merriweather Post Pavilion’s audience a night to remember. Sheryl Crow Nine-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter Sheryl Crow has always had a knack for combining elements of country, blues, folk, rock, and pop. Crow’s new album, Detours, incorporates all the pieces that make her one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists today. Catch Sheryl Crow and her band at Merriweather Post Pavilion with renowned singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne, who is touring before the release of his much-anticipated third album. See these unwavering talents at Merriweather this May. Death Cab for Cutie In the last few years, indie rock’s best-kept secret, Death Cab for Cutie, became one of the most-talked-about bands in modern music. Now, with the release of the long-awaited follow-up to 2005’s Plans, Death Cab for Cutie continue to surpass expectations with their upcoming new album, Narrow Stairs. See them in a whole new light when they grace the Merriweather stage. Iron Maiden Just when you thought the world was safe, English heavy-metal gods Iron Maiden have returned to annihilate all with their “Somewhere Back in Time” tour. Playing songs exclusively from their first seven albums and focusing their stage design on the Powerslave-era Egyptian theme, Maiden will remind us why they should be simultaneously revered and feared. This June, let your “beast” loose as you witness the era that made Iron Maiden invincible. 22 howardLIFE
