Howard Life - June 2008-September 2008 - (Page 40) ART: ARTISTS FIND COMMUNITY AT SAVAGE MILL By Sue Emerson Ever since Historic Savage Mill Uwas restored and began operation as a retail marketplace in 1993, it has attracted creative artisans who wanted studio space. The carefully restored textile mill is filled with natural light—essential to manufacturing operations in the 19th century, but a treasured feature for fine artists and photographers. Artists are drawn to the historic architectural elements that have been left in place to age and intertwine with more modern features: the brick walls and graceful archways, the historic railroad bridge, and the ruins of the original boiler house on the river that runs behind the mill. Architect Roxy Sinex, who is also a fine artist, finds a captivating sense of place here. “It’s not just a building,” she says. “It’s visually fascinating to an artist to be in a place that has a sense of history.
