Howard Life 2009 - (Page 20) continued from page 13 ART: PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES What artists have influenced you and how? I was inspired by an entire people—the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. Born and raised in the Seattle area, I grew up with their images all around me. I believe that’s why I am so drawn to design. Could you talk about your organization’s latest series of events and what you are trying to achieve with them? Now in its third decade, the Columbia Festival of the Arts has been—and continues to be—a powerful force for building community in Columbia and Howard County. Each June the Festival sets out to invigorate the cultural life of Howard County and the surrounding region by presenting a brand new season of world class events comprised of an eclectic mix of visual arts, music, dance, theater, literature, comedy, film and family fun. Over its 16-day period, the Festival shines a spotlight, not only on the arts, but on the community as a Maryland showplace. traditional Scandinavian and Native American crafts, and books. I didn’t visit a museum or travel to a big city until the art club took a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in my senior year. Needless to say, attending art school the following year was quite a culture shock. I have come a long way since then and met many people who inspired and influenced me along the way – family, friends, mentors and associates. Could you talk about your organization’s latest series of events and what you are trying to achieve with them? The Howard County Arts Council sponsors a wide range of programs that not only support local artists, but encourage community–wide participation in the arts. We provide grants, award scholarships, act as an advocate, offer low-cost studio space, and operate the Howard County Center for the Arts, a multi-purpose arts facility in Ellicott City. The Center is an exciting, creative space where people of all ages can take a class, visit an exhibit, or enjoy a performance. This season’s program includes our gala - the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County. One of Howard County’s signature events, it features the popular Rising Star Competition for emerging local performing artists (our version of American Idol) – join us on April 25, 2009 at the Jim Rouse Theatre in Columbia. Through our programs, we hope to create a strong foundation for community-based arts that not only provides Howard Countians with diverse, rewarding experiences in the arts but enhances the quality and enjoyment of Howard County living. I love spending time with my husband and son – they are both incredibly creative and smart and they both have a great sense of humor. I also love returning to Northern Minnesota each year to relax on an island in the middle of Lake Vermillion where I can soak up awesome sunsets and spectacular views. What advice would you give to an artist just starting out? Follow your dreams, be prepared to work hard, and don’t give up.
