In July 2007, as reported by CNNMoney, Cumberland was named the 14th most-affordable housing market out of 220 across the nation. The determination came from the National Association of Home Builders. This was followed in November 2007 by Forbes naming Cumberland as one of the top 10 cities for rising house prices. In a down year for most of the country, the magazine reported the median home price increased 9.3 percent for the year in the county. This was on top of increases of 8 percent in 2006 and 23 percent in 2005. Despite these increases, the median home price for a house in Allegany County in 2006 was only 31 percent of that for the state overall, and only 40 percent of that for the country. This, though, is only part of the reason for the migration to this area. The unemployment rate in November for Allegany County was 4.5 percent, compared to 5.9 percent in 2000. The rate has dropped despite the labor force increasing 8 percent since 2000. A good phrase for the local economy is “growing diversity.” In the past 10 years, the number of companies with 100 employees or more has increased 63 percent. Overall employment in this group has increased 7 percent. Ten years ago, manufacturers accounted for 42 percent of the employment in this group; now they account for 30 percent. Additionally, telecommunications employment in this group has gone from 5 percent to 10 percent, and new industries such as financial services and hotel management have joined the list. Hotel/motel revenues for 2007 have nearly doubled since 2003 and are up 12 percent from 2006. The Maryland State Department of Education has identified Allegany County public schools as having the fourthbest staff-to-student ratio out of all the Maryland counties. In December 2007, Cresaptown Elementary School was recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, along with only five others in the state. A new high school, Mountain Ridge, just opened this school year in Frostburg. Allegany College of Maryland has developed highly specialized curricula— including those in the technological and pre-professional areas—and career programs to satisfy the identified needs of the region. U.S. News & World Report ranks Frostburg State University as one of the best for master’s degrees in the competitive northeast region of the United States. Allegany County offers affordable housing, a diverse economy, and quality education, all with a quality of life envied by many.
