To the west, it is bordered by great kayaking on the Choptank and Tuckahoe rivers, and to the east by the famous Mason-Dixon Line. For 300 years, Caroline County had an economy based almost entirely upon agriculture, which has provided the seemingly endless miles of pleasant scenery. In the late 1970s, Caroline adopted an aggressive policy to attract new industry to create a diversified local economy. The Caroline Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) works closely with programs and partners in the various towns, as well as the private sector, to build economic-development infrastructure. Today, Caroline’s 700 businesses and 10 charming small towns are conveniently less than 90 minutes from the major metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington, DC. The county’s main business centers are in Denton, the county seat on the Choptank, and Federalsburg, poised on Marshyhope Creek. Together, they have three expanding industrial parks within their communities. A new 32-acre technology park in the quaint town of Ridgely was completed in early 2008. With CEDC’s proactive approach of eliminating obstacles, coupled with a menu of revolving business-loan programs established over the last 20 years, Caroline has fostered the relocation of a wide variety of industries to the county. The list of businesses utilizing the local incentives and workforce includes the manufacturers of wood and glass conservatories, paper/plastic cups and tableware, high-tech marine navigation systems, cooling equipment, active wear, outdoor metal furniture, and dietary health products. The county’s unemployment rate is estimated at 4.3 percent. Tourism development is an important component of Caroline’s future, and the community has recently embraced an initiative to establish the county as a tourist destination. With the major routes of MD 50 and 404 providing thousands of travelers daily, Caroline is perfectly positioned to attract visitors who enjoy the outdoors and the county’s rich, early-American heritage. The Eastern Shore’s mild climate allows nearly a year-round venue for outdoor recreation, especially cycling, kayaking, birding, and fishing. To enrich Caroline’s quality of life for residents and the visitor experience, several major redevelopment projects are underway. These initiatives range from a multifaceted waterfront development area and the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings to create an Artsway district and “village,” to the creation of a regional culinary center in Denton. Further, Native American and Underground Railroad heritage projects in the northern and southern sections of the county have also been established to enhance and attract business opportunities. http://www.carolinemd.org http://www.tourcaroline.com http://www.MarylandLife.com http://cl.k12.md.us
