It’s a suburb of Washington, DC, with all of the cultural, entertainment, and economic advantages of the metro region. At the same time, Charles County is part of southern Maryland, one of the state’s most scenic regions, with open space, history, and a maritime heritage. The northern part of Charles County, closest to Washington, DC, is the area where most of the county’s growth takes place. More than half of the population (over 80,000 people) lives in the unincorporated community of Waldorf. (In fact, if Waldorf were incorporated, it would be one of the largest cities in the state!) All of the amenities that you would expect in a large suburban center are there. St. Charles Town Center, a regional shopping mall, gets millions of visitors annually. Up and down Route 301, the main road through the county, you’ll find all of your favorite shopping spots, restaurants, services, and activities. Beyond the commercial centers, Waldorf’s residential communities provide a variety of family-oriented neighborhoods, many within walking or bicycling distance of local schools. Waldorf is also the home of the state’s newest Independent League professional baseball team, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The county seat of La Plata has a charm of its own. County and town government buildings, as well as the Charles County Courthouse, anchor the town’s walkable commercial center. Historic homes, professional offices, unique restaurants, and specialty shops complete the setting. La Plata is also home to the Port Tobacco Players Theatre, an acclaimed community-theater group and one of two such venues in the county. The other is the Black Box Theater at the Indian Head Center for the Arts in the town of Indian Head, Charles County’s other municipality. Indian Head is also the home to a Naval installation which hosts several commands, including the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The base is one of the county’s leading employers, but proximity to Washington, DC, is the main attraction for many of the high-tech, professional-services companies moving into the county. Outside of the cities, Charles County is less “Washington, DC, metro” and more “southern Maryland,” with farms, forests, parks, and over 300 miles of shoreline, most of it on the lower Potomac River. Nature lovers will find miles of hiking trails; seafood lovers will get their fill; bird watchers will find many feathered friends; fishermen have plenty of options; and historians can connect with the past, thanks to the county’s rich colonial history. With so much to offer—from suburban convenience to nature’s bounty—Charles County is truly the best of both worlds.
